How to Clean the Drain Hole in Bathroom Sink

Having a clogged bathroom sink drain can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to get ready for the day or need to use it for any other purpose. Luckily, cleaning the drain hole is a relatively simple task that can be done with a few household items. Here are the essential steps:

Materials you'll need:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Hot water
  • Plunger
  • Drain snake (optional)

Steps:

1. Remove the Drain Stopper

Start by removing the drain stopper if there's one. You can use a screwdriver or a pair of pliers to do this.

2. Pour Baking Soda Down the Drain

Pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and can help to break down clogs.

3. Follow with Vinegar

Next, pour about 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain. The vinegar will react with the baking soda and create a fizzing action that can help to loosen the clog.

4. Let it Sit

Allow the baking soda and vinegar to sit in the drain for about 15 minutes. This will give it time to work on the clog.

5. Flush with Hot Water

After 15 minutes, flush the drain with hot water for several minutes. This will help to rinse away the baking soda and vinegar and clear the clog.

6. Use a Plunger

If the clog is still not cleared, try using a plunger. Place the plunger over the drain hole and pump it up and down vigorously for several minutes. This can help to dislodge the clog.

7. Use a Drain Snake

If the plunger doesn't work, you can try using a drain snake. A drain snake is a long, flexible wire that can be inserted into the drain to clear clogs. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to feed the snake into the drain. Once you feel resistance, turn the handle in the opposite direction to remove the clog.

8. Repeat if Necessary

If the clog is still not cleared, you may need to repeat the steps above.

Tips:

  • To prevent clogs from forming, try to avoid pouring grease or hair down the drain.
  • Clean the drain hole regularly with a drain cleaner to prevent clogs from forming.
  • If you have a tough clog that you can't clear yourself, call a plumber.
