How to Get Rid of Bathroom Sink Drain Odor
A stinky bathroom sink drain can be a real nuisance. Not only is it unpleasant to smell, but it can also be a sign of a more serious problem. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get rid of the odor and keep your sink smelling fresh.
1. Clean the Drain
The most common cause of bathroom sink drain odor is a build-up of gunk and grime. To clean the drain, start by pouring a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.
If that doesn't work, you can try using a commercial drain cleaner. Be sure to follow the directions on the label carefully.
2. Check the P-Trap
The P-trap is a U-shaped pipe that is located under the sink. It is designed to prevent sewer gases from backing up into the sink. If the P-trap is clogged, it can cause the sink to smell.
To check the P-trap, place a bucket under the sink and then loosen the nuts that hold the P-trap in place. Be careful not to drop the P-trap into the bucket. Once the P-trap is loose, remove it and inspect it for clogs. If it is clogged, clean it out with a wire brush.
3. Replace the Sink Stopper
The sink stopper can also be a source of odor. If the stopper is made of rubber, it can harbor bacteria that can cause the sink to smell. To clean the sink stopper, remove it from the sink and soak it in a solution of bleach and water. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse it off with water.
If the sink stopper is made of metal, you can clean it with a wire brush and some dish soap. Once the stopper is clean, reattach it to the sink.
4. Use an Enzyme Cleaner
Enzyme cleaners are a great way to break down the organic matter that can cause sink drains to smell. To use an enzyme cleaner, simply pour it down the drain and let it sit for the amount of time specified on the label. Then, flush the drain with hot water.
5. Call a Plumber
If you have tried all of the above methods and the sink still smells, it's time to call a plumber. There may be a more serious problem that needs to be addressed, such as a broken or leaking pipe.
