How to Install a New Drain in a Bathroom Sink

Replacing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to install a new drain in a bathroom sink

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • New drain assembly
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's putty
  • Basin wrench
  • Flashlight (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Sink

Start by placing a towel or cloth around the base of the sink to catch any water or debris. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that secure the old drain assembly to the sink. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this could damage the sink.

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain Assembly

Once the nuts are loose, carefully remove the old drain assembly. If the old drain is stuck, you may need to use a basin wrench to loosen it. Be sure to inspect the old drain for any damage or debris and clean the area around the drain hole.

Step 3: Apply Plumber's Putty

Apply a ring of plumber's putty around the base of the new drain assembly. The plumber's putty will help to create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink. Smooth the putty down with your finger or a damp cloth.

Step 4: Install the New Drain Assembly

Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole in the sink. Align the drain assembly so that the overflow hole is facing the back of the sink. Hand-tighten the nuts that secure the drain assembly to the sink.

Step 5: Tighten the Nuts

Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts that secure the drain assembly to the sink. Be sure to tighten the nuts evenly to ensure a watertight seal. Do not overtighten the nuts, as this could damage the drain assembly or the sink.

Step 6: Install the Pop-Up Assembly

If your new drain assembly includes a pop-up assembly, insert the pop-up assembly into the drain hole in the sink. Align the pop-up assembly so that the lift rod is facing the front of the sink. Secure the pop-up assembly by tightening the set screw on the underside of the sink.

Step 7: Test the Drain

Turn on the water and check for any leaks around the drain assembly. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts further or add more plumber's putty. Once you are satisfied that there are no leaks, remove the towel or cloth from around the base of the sink.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, it is best to hire a professional plumber to install the new drain.
  • Be sure to use a flashlight to inspect the area around the drain hole for any damage or debris before installing the new drain assembly.
  • Do not overtighten the nuts that secure the drain assembly to the sink, as this could damage the drain assembly or the sink.
