Installing a Bathroom Sink Drain P-Trap: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a bathroom sink drain P-trap is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed with minimal tools and materials. A P-trap is a U-shaped pipe that connects the sink drain to the drainpipe. It serves two main purposes: to prevent sewer gases from entering the bathroom and to create a water seal that prevents the sink from draining slowly.

Tools Needed:

Adjustable wrench or pliers
Slip joint pliers
Basin wrench
Putty knife
Flashlight

P-trap
Slip nuts (2)
Washers (2)
Plumber's putty

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the sink. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the pipes.

Step 2: Remove the Old P-Trap

Place a bucket or bowl underneath the P-trap to catch any remaining water. Using an adjustable wrench or pliers, loosen the slip nuts that connect the P-trap to the sink drain and drainpipe. Remove the P-trap and discard it.

Step 3: Clean the Drain

Inspect the drain opening in the sink and the drainpipe. Remove any debris or old sealant. If the drain is clogged, use a drain snake or auger to clear it.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope and place it around the base of the slip nuts. This will help create a watertight seal.

Step 5: Install the New P-Trap

Place one washer onto each slip nut and screw the nuts onto the P-trap hand-tight. Then, using a basin wrench, tighten the slip nuts until they are snug but not overtightened. Connect the P-trap to the sink drain and drainpipe.

Step 6: Check for Leaks

Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Use a flashlight to inspect the connections around the P-trap. If you find any leaks, tighten the slip nuts further.

Step 7: Finish Up

Once you are satisfied that there are no leaks, you can finish up the installation. Use a putty knife to remove any excess plumber's putty from around the slip nuts. Replace the drain stopper and open the faucet to let the water run for a few minutes to test the sink.

Tips:

If you have a double sink, you will need to install two P-traps.
Make sure that the P-trap is installed correctly. The trap should be positioned so that the U-shape is facing down.
Do not overtighten the slip nuts. Overtightening can damage the nuts or P-trap.
