Bathroom Sink Clogged: Drano Didn't Work – What Now?

A clogged bathroom sink can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem. You've tried the tried-and-true method – pouring Drano down the drain – but to no avail. The sink stubbornly remains clogged, and you're left wondering what to do next. Fear not, there are a number of solutions to clear that stubborn clog, ranging from simple home remedies to more advanced plumbing techniques.

Plunging the Drain

The classic solution for a clogged drain is a good, old-fashioned plunge. While you may have already tried this, sometimes a persistent, well-executed plunge can do the trick. Here's how to do it right:

  1. Clear the Drain Area: Remove any obstacles around the sink that might impede the plunger, like soap bottles or toothbrushes.
  2. Fill the Sink with Water: Add enough water to the sink to cover the plunger's cup but not completely fill the basin.
  3. Seal the Drain: Place the plunger directly over the drain, ensuring a tight seal. If the drain is a pop-up stopper, you may need to manually cover it with a cloth to force the plunger's suction.
  4. Apply Force: Up and down, up and down, move the plunger with a firm, consistent motion. The goal is to create enough pressure to dislodge the clog.
  5. Repeat: If the clog doesn't budge on the first try, keep plunging. Sometimes, it takes a few attempts to break up the blockage.

If plunging is unsuccessful, try a different approach.

Using a Snake

A plumbing snake, also known as a drain auger, is a long, flexible cable with a spiral tip designed to penetrate and break up clogs. It is an effective tool for reaching stubborn blockages that are deep within the drainpipe.

  1. Insert the Snake: Carefully feed the snake's tip into the drain opening.
  2. Turn the Crank: Slowly turn the snake's crank, advancing the cable into the drainpipe until you feel resistance. This indicates you've encountered the clog.
  3. Break Up the Clog: Once you feel resistance, twist the snake back and forth with gentle pressure to break up the blockage.
  4. Retrieve the Snake: Once the clog has been broken up, slowly withdraw the snake from the drain.
  5. Flush with Water: Run hot water down the drain to flush away any remaining debris.

Be mindful of the snake's length and avoid forcing it too far. It's best to consult a professional plumber if you encounter any difficulties or if the clog seems particularly stubborn.

Checking for Other Issues

Sometimes, the clog might not be deep within the drainpipe, but rather in a nearby area. Here are some things to check:

  • Overflow Drain: The overflow drain, located near the top of the sink, can become clogged with debris, preventing water from draining properly. Clean the overflow drain with a cleaning tool or a wire coat hanger.
  • P-Trap: The P-trap, the curved pipe located under the sink, can collect hair, soap, and other debris. If possible, disconnect the P-trap and carefully clean it out.
  • Vent Stack: The vent stack, a vertical pipe that connects to the drainpipe, allows air to flow into the system, preventing suction that might otherwise cause clogs. If the vent stack is blocked, it can significantly impact drainage. Check for blockages within the vent stack and consult a plumber if necessary.

If you've tried all the above solutions and the clog persists, then it's time to call a professional plumber. They have specialized tools and expertise to handle even the most challenging drain clogs.
