How Do You Replace A Single Handle Bathroom Faucet Cartridge
Replacing a single handle bathroom faucet cartridge is a relatively easy plumbing task that can be completed in about an hour. By following these simple steps, you can save yourself the cost of calling a plumber.
Tools and materials you'll need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Allen wrench (if necessary)
- Replacement faucet cartridge
- Plumber's putty
- Rags
- Bucket
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to close them.
2. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.
3. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut that holds the cartridge in place. The packing nut is usually located at the base of the faucet handle.
4. If the cartridge is held in place by an Allen screw, use an Allen wrench to remove the screw.
5. Pull the old cartridge straight out of the faucet body.
6. Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the base of the new cartridge.
7. Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body, pushing it in until it is fully seated.
8. If the cartridge is held in place by an Allen screw, insert the screw and tighten it with an Allen wrench.
9. Tighten the packing nut with an adjustable wrench.
10. Turn on the water supply to the faucet and check for leaks.
11. If there are no leaks, you're all done!
