How to Replace a Washer in a Bathroom Sink Drain Pipe

A faulty washer in the drain pipe of a bathroom sink can lead to leaks and other plumbing problems. Replacing a washer is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools and materials.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement washer (rubber or plastic)
  • Adjustable wrench or pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Rags or paper towels

Step 1: Turn Off Water Supply

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the sink. This can be done by closing the shut-off valve under the sink or by turning off the main water supply to the house.

Step 2: Remove the Drain Stopper

Locate the drain stopper in the center of the sink. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the stopper in place. Once the screw is removed, you can lift out the stopper.

Step 3: Loosen the Drain Nut

Underneath the drain stopper, you will see a drain nut. Use an adjustable wrench or pliers to loosen the nut. Be careful not to overtighten the nut, as this can damage the drain pipe.

Step 4: Remove the Old Washer

Once the drain nut is loose, you can remove the old washer. Use your fingers or a pair of pliers to gently pull the washer off the drain pipe.

Step 5: Install the New Washer

Take the new washer and place it on the drain pipe. Make sure that the washer is seated properly and that it is facing the correct direction. You may need to apply a small amount of sealant to the washer to ensure a good seal.

Step 6: Tighten the Drain Nut

Use the wrench or pliers to tighten the drain nut. Again, be careful not to overtighten the nut. Once the nut is tight, turn on the water supply and check for leaks.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drain Stopper

Once you have checked for leaks, you can reinstall the drain stopper. Place the stopper in the drain hole and tighten the screw to hold it in place.

Tips

  • If you are having difficulty removing the old washer, you can try using a pair of pliers to gently pry it off.
  • Be sure to use a washer that is the correct size and type for your drain pipe.
  • If you are still having problems with leaks after replacing the washer, you may need to call a plumber for assistance.
