How to Replace Bathroom Laminate Countertops

Materials you'll need

New laminate countertop
Plywood or MDF backer board
Construction adhesive
Caulk
Jigsaw or circular saw

Steps

1. Remove the old countertop

Before you can install the new countertop, you need to remove the old one. To do this, first turn off the water supply to the sink and disconnect the plumbing fixtures. Then, use a putty knife to carefully pry the old countertop away from the cabinets. Once the countertop is loose, lift it off and set it aside.

2. Install the backer board

The backer board provides support for the new countertop. Cut the backer board to fit the space where the old countertop was installed. Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the back of the backer board and press it into place. Secure the backer board with screws.

3. Cut the new countertop

Measure the space where the new countertop will be installed and cut it to size using a jigsaw or circular saw. Be sure to measure twice and cut once to avoid mistakes.

4. Apply construction adhesive

Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the top of the backer board. This will help to hold the new countertop in place.

5. Install the new countertop

Carefully lift the new countertop into place and set it on top of the backer board. Align the countertop with the cabinets and press it down firmly to secure it. Wipe away any excess construction adhesive that squeezes out from around the edges.

6. Caulk the edges

Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the countertop where it meets the cabinets and the wall. This will help to seal out moisture and prevent water damage.
