Remove Sink Faucet – A Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing a bathroom sink faucet is not as complicated as it may seem. With the right tools and a little bit of patience, you can complete the task successfully. This guide will take you through all the necessary steps to remove your existing sink faucet and install a new one.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench

Channel-type pliers

Phillips head screwdriver

Basin wrench

New sink faucet

Teflon tape

Plumber's putty

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn Off the Water Supply:

Start by closing both the hot and cold water supply valves located under the sink. If your sink doesn't have shut-off valves, you'll need to turn off the main water supply to your house.

2. Detach the Water Supply Lines:

Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that connect the water supply lines to the faucet. Detach the lines carefully and avoid damaging the faucet or water pipes.

3. Disconnect the Drain Line:

Locate the drain line that connects the faucet to the P-trap or drainpipe. Loosen the slip nut holding the drain line to the faucet using channel-type pliers.

4. Remove the Base Plate:

Using the Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the screws securing the faucet's base plate to the sink. If the base plate is difficult to remove, use a basin wrench to gently loosen it.

5. Remove the Old Faucet:

Once the base plate is removed, carefully pull the old faucet up and out of the sink.

6. Apply Plumber's Putty and Teflon Tape:

Apply a small bead of plumber's putty around the base of the new faucet and wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the new water supply lines.

7. Install the New Faucet:

Insert the new faucet into the hole in the sink and secure it with the base plate and screws. Tighten the screws using the Phillips head screwdriver.

8. Reconnect the Water Supply Lines:

Connect the new water supply lines to the faucet and hand-tighten the nuts. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten them, but avoid overtightening.

9. Reconnect the Drain Line:

Place the drain line over the faucet's drain outlet and tighten the slip nut using channel-type pliers.

10. Turn On the Water Supply:

Slowly turn on the hot and cold water supply valves under the sink or turn on the main water supply. Check for any leaks around the faucet or water lines.

11. Test the Faucet:

Turn on the faucet and check if the water flows smoothly and the temperature is correct. If everything is working properly, you have successfully replaced your sink faucet.
