Repairing A Sink Faucet In The Bathroom: A Step-By-Step Guide

A Leaky sink faucet in the bathroom can be a nuisance and lead to a waste of water. If you're facing this issue, it's possible to fix it yourself with a few simple tools and some basic plumbing knowledge. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you repair a bathroom sink faucet.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you start, make sure you have the following tools and materials needed for the repair:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Allen wrench (if required)
  • Replacement faucet cartridge or washer (if needed)
  • Replacement faucet handle (if needed)
  • Teflon tape
  • Plumber's putty
  • Bucket or container for catching water
  • Rags or towels for cleaning up

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shutoff valves underneath the sink. There should be two valves, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise until they are completely closed. This will stop the flow of water to the faucet.

Step 3: Remove the Faucet Handle

Use the Phillips head screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the screws that hold the faucet handle in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the handle up and off the faucet.

Step 4: Remove the Faucet Cartridge or Washer

Inside the faucet, you will find a cartridge or a washer. The cartridge is usually a cylindrical-shaped part, while the washer is a flat, round piece. Use the flathead screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the cartridge or washer. Be careful not to lose the small parts that may come out along with the cartridge or washer.

Step 5: Clean the Faucet Body

Once the cartridge or washer is removed, take the opportunity to clean the inside of the faucet body. Use a rag or towel to wipe away any dirt or debris. You can also use a mild cleaning solution to remove any mineral deposits or rust.

Step 6: Install the New Cartridge or Washer

Take the new cartridge or washer and insert it into the faucet body. Make sure it is properly seated and aligned. Secure it in place using the screws or Allen wrench.

Step 7: Reattach the Faucet Handle

Take the faucet handle and align it with the stem. Secure it in place using the screws that you removed earlier.

Step 8: Turn on the Water Supply

Open the shutoff valves underneath the sink to turn on the water supply. Check the faucet for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections until the leaks stop.

Step 9: Test the Faucet

Turn on the faucet and let the water run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the faucet base and the handle. If there are no leaks, the repair is successful.

Additional Tips:

  • If you are replacing the entire faucet, make sure to purchase a faucet that is compatible with your sink.
  • If you are replacing the cartridge or washer, make sure to get the correct size and type for your faucet.
  • When tightening the connections, do not overtighten them as this could damage the faucet.
  • If you are not comfortable performing the repair yourself, it is best to call a qualified plumber for assistance.
