Replacing Shut Off Valves Under Bathroom Sink

A leaky shut-off valve under your bathroom sink can be a major nuisance. Not only can it waste water and increase your water bill, but it can also lead to more serious problems, such as water damage to your bathroom floor or cabinetry. Replacing a shut-off valve is a relatively simple plumbing repair that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.

Materials required:

  • Two new shut-off valves (one for the hot water line and one for the cold water line)
  • Teflon tape
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Rags

Procedure:

1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be two shut-off valves located under the sink, one for the hot water line and one for the cold water line. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off the water supply.

2. Open the faucets in the sink to release any remaining water pressure.

3. Place a bucket or bowl under the shut-off valves to catch any water that may leak out.

4. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the shut-off valves in place. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the valves.

5. Once the nuts are loose, use a basin wrench to remove the shut-off valves from the water lines.

6. Apply a few wraps of Teflon tape to the threads of the new shut-off valves. This will help to create a watertight seal.

7. Hand-tighten the new shut-off valves onto the water lines.

8. Use an adjustable wrench to further tighten the nuts, but be careful not to overtighten.

9. Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts further.

10. Run the water through the faucets for a few minutes to ensure that the shut-off valves are working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable replacing the shut-off valves yourself, you can call a plumber to do the job for you.
  • It is a good idea to replace the shut-off valves under your bathroom sink every 5 to 10 years to prevent leaks.
  • If you have any questions about replacing the shut-off valves under your bathroom sink, consult with a qualified plumber.
