How to Remove a Kohler Bathroom Sink Drain

Removing a Kohler bathroom sink drain is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in a few simple steps. Whether you're replacing an old drain or simply cleaning it out, following the correct procedure will ensure a successful outcome.

Step 1: Gather Tools

Before starting, gather the necessary tools, including:

  • Adjustable wrench or basin wrench
  • Slip-joint pliers
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Flashlight (optional)

Step 2: Turn Off Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off to prevent water from flowing into the drain while working.

Step 3: Remove the Stopper

If your sink has a stopper, lift it out by pulling it straight up. If it's difficult to remove, use pliers to gently pry it loose.

Step 4: Loosen the Slip Nut

Use the adjustable wrench or basin wrench to loosen the slip nut that connects the drain body to the sink. Turn the nut counterclockwise until it can be removed by hand.

Step 5: Detach the Drain Body

Once the slip nut is loose, grasp the drain body and pull it up and out of the sink. If it's stuck, gently pry it loose with a screwdriver or putty knife.

Step 6: Clean the Components

Before reassembling the drain, take the opportunity to clean any debris or buildup from the components. Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to clean the drain body, slip nut, and the opening in the sink.

Step 7: Remove the Hair Strainer (Optional)

Some Kohler sink drains have a hair strainer located inside the drain body. If yours has one, remove it by gently pulling it out.

Step 8: Reinstall the Hair Strainer (Optional)

If you removed the hair strainer, insert it back into the drain body before reassembling the drain.

Step 9: Reattach the Drain Body

Insert the drain body back into the sink opening and align it properly.

Step 10: Tighten the Slip Nut

Hand-tighten the slip nut onto the drain body, then use the adjustable wrench to further tighten it. Do not overtighten, as this could damage the components.

Step 11: Reinstall the Stopper

Insert the stopper back into the drain and ensure it fits snugly.

Step 12: Turn On Water Supply

Turn on the water supply valves under the sink and check for any leaks. If you notice any leaks, tighten the slip nut further or replace the components as needed.

Tips:

  • If the slip nut is stuck, apply a penetrating oil or WD-40 to loosen it.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the inside of the drain body and look for any debris or corrosion.
  • Replace any damaged or corroded components, such as washers or gaskets.
  • If you're having difficulty with the removal process, consult a professional plumber for assistance.
