Bathroom Faucet Removal and Replacement: A Comprehensive Guide

Replacing a bathroom faucet can be a daunting task, especially for those who have never done it before. However, with proper planning and execution, it can be a rewarding DIY project that can save you money and enhance the functionality of your bathroom.

Materials Required

  • New bathroom faucet
  • Wrenches (adjustable or specific sizes)
  • Pliers
  • Plumber's putty
  • Teflon tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Safety First:

Before starting any work, turn off the water supply to the bathroom. This is usually done by turning off the main water valve or closing the valves under the bathroom sink.

2. Remove the Old Faucet Handle:

Remove the handle of the old faucet by locating the set screw or cap underneath it. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen it and remove the handle.

3. Disconnect the Water Lines:

Using wrenches, loosen the nuts connecting the hot and cold water supply lines to the faucet body. Be prepared for water to leak out once the lines are disconnected.

4. Remove the Mounting Nuts:

Underneath the faucet, locate the mounting nuts that secure it to the sink or countertop. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen these nuts.

5. Lift the Faucet:

Carefully lift the old faucet up and out of the sink or countertop. Remove any remaining putty or debris from the mounting area.

6. Install the New Faucet:

Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty around the base of the new faucet and insert it into the sink or countertop opening.

7. Tighten the Mounting Nuts:

From underneath, tighten the mounting nuts by hand and then snug them up further using an adjustable wrench.

8. Reconnect the Water Lines:

Wrap the threads of the water supply lines with Teflon tape and reconnect them to the new faucet. Hand-tighten the nuts and then use a wrench to further secure them.

9. Reinstall the Faucet Handle:

Align the new faucet handle with the faucet body and tighten the set screw or cap to secure it.

10. Turn on the Water Supply:

Slowly turn on the water supply and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections further until the leaks stop.

Cost Considerations

The cost of removing and replacing a bathroom faucet can vary depending on the type of faucet, the complexity of the installation, and whether or not you hire a plumber. Generally, you can expect to pay between $100 to $400 for a basic faucet replacement, including materials and labor.

If you are replacing a higher-end faucet or if the installation requires additional work, such as repairing damaged pipes, the cost may be higher. Hiring a professional plumber can also increase the cost, but it can provide peace of mind and ensure that the job is done correctly.
