How To Change a Bathroom Tap Cartridge

Replacing a bathroom tap cartridge is a common plumbing repair that can be tackled by homeowners with basic DIY skills. A worn or damaged cartridge can lead to leaks, drips, and inconsistent water flow. This guide will provide a step-by-step explanation of how to change a bathroom tap cartridge, ensuring a smooth and successful repair.

1. Gather Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting the repair, gather the necessary tools and materials. This will ensure a seamless process and minimize interruptions. The following items are essential:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Basin wrench (for hard-to-reach areas)
  • Replacement cartridge (compatible with your tap model)
  • Teflon tape
  • Bucket or container to catch water
  • Towels or rags for cleaning up spills
  • Safety goggles

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

To avoid flooding and potential damage, it is crucial to turn off the water supply to the affected tap before proceeding. Locate the shut-off valve for the bathroom sink or bathtub and turn it fully clockwise. To confirm the water is off, try turning on the tap. If no water flows, proceed to the next step.

3. Remove the Handle and Escutcheon

The handle and escutcheon (decorative plate around the tap) need to be removed to access the cartridge. Different taps have varying mechanisms for handle removal. Some may have a set screw on the side, while others require a pull or twist action. Consult the manufacturer's instructions or a manual for specific guidance. Once the handle is detached, carefully unscrew the escutcheon using a screwdriver.

4. Remove the Bonnet and Cartridge

With the handle and escutcheon removed, the bonnet, which covers the cartridge, becomes visible. The bonnet is typically secured by a nut. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the nut, taking care not to damage the surrounding parts. Once the bonnet is off, the cartridge can be pulled out. It may be necessary to use a small screwdriver or pliers to gently pry it out if it is stuck. Examine the old cartridge for wear or damage. This will help identify the cause of the issue and ensure a successful replacement.

5. Install the New Cartridge

Before installing the new cartridge, ensure it matches the specifications of your existing tap. Some cartridges have specific features, such as ceramic discs or rubber seals, that may vary between models. Clean the housing where the cartridge sits, removing any debris or mineral deposits. Wrap two to three layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the new cartridge, ensuring a water-tight seal. Gently insert the new cartridge into the housing, aligning it with the stem and ensuring it is fully seated.

6. Reassemble the Tap

With the new cartridge in place, reassemble the tap in reverse order. Screw the bonnet back on, tightening it with the adjustable wrench. Replace the escutcheon and ensure it is securely fastened. Finally, attach the handle, ensuring it is properly aligned and fits snugly. Once everything is reassembled, turn the water supply back on slowly, checking for leaks. Tighten the bonnet nut further if necessary to eliminate any drips.

After the repair is complete, test the tap thoroughly, ensuring it operates smoothly and without leaks. If there are any issues, re-evaluate the installation process or consult a professional plumber for assistance.
