How to Fix a Dripping Bathroom Faucet with Double Handles

Dealing with a dripping bathroom faucet can be frustrating, especially when it's your double-handled faucet. Here are some essential aspects to consider when fixing this common plumbing issue:

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

* Adjustable wrench or pliers * Allen wrench (if necessary) * Replacement washers or O-rings * Flashlight * Bucket or bowl

1. Shut Off the Water Supply:

Before commencing any repairs, turn off the water supply valves beneath the sink or near the faucet. This will prevent water from gushing out during the repair process.

2. Remove the Aerator (Optional):

Some double-handled faucets have an aerator attached to the end of the spout. If your faucet has one, unscrew it using pliers or an adjustable wrench.

3. Identify the Problem:

Examine the faucet components to identify where the leak is originating from. Common sources include the handle, spout, or base of the faucet.

4. Check the Washers or O-Rings:

If the leak is coming from the handle, the washers or O-rings within may be worn out or damaged. Remove the handle by unscrewing the cap or nut using an Allen wrench or pliers. Replace the old washers or O-rings with new ones.

5. Check the Spout O-Ring:

If the leak is coming from the base of the spout, the O-ring inside the spout may need to be replaced. Use an adjustable wrench to detach the spout from the faucet body and replace the O-ring.

6. Check the Base Washer:

The leak may also originate from the washer located at the base of the faucet. Using an adjustable wrench, carefully remove the base of the faucet and replace the washer.

7. Reassemble the Faucet:

After replacing the necessary washers or O-rings, reassemble the faucet in reverse order. Hand-tighten the components initially and then use an adjustable wrench to secure them further.

8. Test the Faucet:

Turn the water supply valves back on and check if the leak has been resolved. If the faucet is still dripping, recheck the components and ensure they are properly installed.

9. Additional Tips:

* Before dismantling the faucet, use a flashlight to inspect the internal components. * If the handles are loose or wobbly, tighten the packing nut located beneath the handle. * Use a plumber's grease to lubricate the moving parts of the faucet. * If the repairs seem complex or beyond your comfort level, it's advisable to contact a professional plumber.
