How to Fix a Stinky Bathroom Drain

A smelly bathroom drain is not only unpleasant but also unhygienic. The smell can be caused by various factors, such as hair, soap scum, bacteria, and mold. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to fix a stinky bathroom drain.

1. Clean the Drain Stopper and Trap

The drain stopper and trap are two common culprits for smelly drains. Hair and soap scum can accumulate on these surfaces, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. To clean the drain stopper, remove it and soak it in a solution of hot water and bleach. Scrub the stopper with a sponge or toothbrush to remove any stubborn debris. To clean the trap, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the solution fizz for a few minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.

2. Use a Commercial Drain Cleaner

There are several commercial drain cleaners on the market that can effectively remove clogs and eliminate odors. When using a chemical drain cleaner, be sure to follow the instructions carefully and wear gloves to protect your hands. Some drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage pipes if used improperly.

3. Try a Natural Drain Cleaner

If you prefer to avoid using harsh chemicals, there are several natural drain cleaners that can be just as effective. Baking soda and vinegar are two common natural drain cleaners. Simply pour a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the solution fizz for a few minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.

4. Use a Drain Snake

If the above methods do not work, you may need to use a drain snake to remove a clog. A drain snake is a long, flexible cable that can be inserted into the drain to break up clogs. To use a drain snake, remove the drain stopper and insert the snake into the drain. Turn the snake clockwise while pushing it down the drain. When you feel resistance, gently pull the snake back and forth to break up the clog. Once the clog is removed, flush the drain with hot water.

5. Call a Plumber

If you are unable to fix the stinky drain yourself, you may need to call a plumber. A plumber can use specialized tools and equipment to identify and remove the cause of the odor.

Preventing Stinky Bathroom Drains

There are several things you can do to prevent stinky bathroom drains:

  • Clean your drains regularly.
  • Avoid pouring grease or food down the drain.
  • Cover your drains when not in use.
  • Use a drain screen to catch hair and other debris.
  • Run hot water down the drain for a few minutes every week to flush out any buildup.

By following these tips, you can keep your bathroom drains smelling fresh and clean.
