How to Install a Moen Bathroom Sink Drain

Replacing or installing a Moen bathroom sink drain is a straightforward task that can be completed without the need for professional help. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Materials Required:

  • New Moen bathroom sink drain
  • Plumber's putty
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flashlight (optional)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Sink and Drain Assembly:

  • Clean the sink and drain area thoroughly.
  • Remove the old drain assembly by unscrewing the slip nut that secures it to the sink.
  • Apply a thin bead of plumber's putty around the rim of the new drain assembly.

2. Install the Drain Assembly:

  • Insert the drain assembly into the sink hole and gently press it down to form a seal with the plumber's putty.
  • Align the drain assembly with the sink and secure it by hand-tightening the slip nut.
  • Use an adjustable wrench to further tighten the slip nut until it is snug. Avoid overtightening.

3. Connect the Tailpiece:

  • Attach the tailpiece, which is the curved pipe that connects the drain assembly to the P-trap, to the drain assembly.
  • Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws that secure the tailpiece to the drain assembly.

4. Install the P-Trap:

  • Connect the P-trap, which is the U-shaped pipe that prevents sewer gases from entering the bathroom, to the tailpiece.
  • Tighten the nuts that secure the P-trap to the tailpiece.

5. Connect the Drainpipe:

  • Connect the drainpipe, which leads to the main drain line, to the P-trap.
  • Tighten the nuts that secure the drainpipe to the P-trap.

6. Test the Drain:

  • Turn on the water faucet and let water run through the drain.
  • Check for any leaks around the drain assembly, tailpiece, P-trap, and drainpipe connections.
  • If there are any leaks, tighten the connections accordingly.

7. Install the Trim Plate:

  • Place the trim plate, which is the decorative cover for the drain assembly, over the drain assembly.
  • Secure the trim plate with the screws provided.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Moen bathroom sink drain.

Additional Tips:

  • If you encounter any difficulties, refer to the instructions provided with the new drain assembly.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the underside of the sink and drain connections for any leaks.
  • Do not overtighten any connections, as this could damage the drain assembly or connections.
  • If you are uncomfortable performing this task, it is recommended to seek professional assistance.
