How To Install Bathroom Light With Fan: A Step-By-Step Guide

Whether you're remodeling your bathroom or simply replacing an old light fixture, installing a new bathroom light with a fan can be a daunting task if you're not familiar with electrical work. However, with careful planning and attention to detail, it's a project that can be completed in a few hours.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. Here's a list of what you'll need:

  • Bathroom light with fan
  • Electrical box
  • Mounting screws
  • Electrical wire (14-gauge or larger)
  • Wire nuts
  • Electrical tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Utility knife
  • Safety glasses

Step 2: Prepare the Electrical Box

If you're replacing an existing light fixture, you can skip this step. However, if you're installing a new light fixture, you'll need to install an electrical box in the ceiling.

To do this, use a utility knife to cut a hole in the ceiling the size of the electrical box. Then, insert the electrical box into the hole and secure it with the mounting screws.

Step 3: Connect the Electrical Wires

Once the electrical box is installed, you need to connect the electrical wires.

First, turn off the power to the bathroom at the circuit breaker. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the cover plate from the electrical box.

Inside the electrical box, you'll see three wires: a black wire (hot wire), a white wire (neutral wire), and a bare copper wire (ground wire).

Connect the black wire from the light fixture to the black wire in the electrical box. Connect the white wire from the light fixture to the white wire in the electrical box. And connect the bare copper wire from the light fixture to the bare copper wire in the electrical box.

Use wire nuts to secure the connections and then wrap the connections with electrical tape.

Step 4: Install the Light Fixture

Once the electrical wires are connected, you can install the light fixture.

To do this, simply insert the light fixture into the electrical box and secure it with the mounting screws.

Step 5: Test the Light Fixture

Once the light fixture is installed, turn on the power to the bathroom at the circuit breaker. Then, turn on the light switch to test the light fixture.

If the light fixture doesn't turn on, check the following:

  • Make sure that the power is turned on at the circuit breaker.
  • Make sure that the light switch is turned on.
  • Check the connections between the electrical wires and the light fixture.

If you've checked all of these things and the light fixture still doesn't turn on, you may need to call an electrician for help.
