How to Install a Shut-Off Valve in a Bathroom Sink
A shut-off valve is an essential plumbing component that allows you to control the flow of water to your bathroom sink. Installing a shut-off valve is a relatively simple DIY project that can save you time and money in the long run.
Materials you will need:
- Shut-off valve
- Wrench
- Teflon tape
- Basin wrench
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. To do this, locate the main water shut-off valve for your home and turn it clockwise to close it.
2. Open the faucet to release any residual water pressure.
3. Place a bucket or towel under the sink to catch any water that may leak during the installation.
4. Locate the water supply lines under the sink. There will be one hot water line and one cold water line. The hot water line will typically be on the left and the cold water line on the right.
5. Wrap 2-3 layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the shut-off valve. This will help create a watertight seal.
6. Screw the shut-off valve onto the water supply line, using a wrench to tighten it. Do not overtighten the valve, as this can damage the seal.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the other water supply line.
8. Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the shut-off valves further until the leaks stop.
9. Turn off the water supply to the sink and open the faucet to flush out any debris that may have entered the water lines during the installation.
