How to Lay Vinyl Plank Flooring in a Small Bathroom
Laying vinyl plank flooring in a small bathroom can be a rewarding DIY project that adds value and style to your home. However, there are some essential aspects to consider to ensure a successful installation.
Planning and Preparation:
Before you begin, plan the layout of the planks, making sure to account for obstacles like toilets and vanities. Measure the room accurately and purchase the necessary materials, including flooring, underlayment, and trim. Surface preparation is crucial, so remove old flooring and clean the subfloor thoroughly.
Installing the Underlayment:
Underlayment provides cushioning, reduces noise, and improves the overall stability of the vinyl planks. Roll out the underlayment over the subfloor, ensuring there are no gaps or overlaps. Secure it with tape or adhesive if necessary.
Laying the First Row:
Start laying the vinyl planks along the longest wall, using spacers to ensure even gaps from the wall. Lock the planks together according to the manufacturer's instructions, checking for level as you go. Trim the last plank to fit and remove any excess underlayment.
Laying Subsequent Rows:
Continue laying the vinyl planks in staggered rows, staggering the joints to prevent a "ladder" effect. Tap the planks together firmly, and use a tapping block if necessary. Align the planks perpendicular to the previous row, using spacers to maintain uniform gaps.
Cutting and Fitting:
When encountering obstacles like toilets or vanities, measure and cut the planks accordingly. Use a sharp utility knife or a flooring cutter for precise cuts. Carefully fit the planks around the obstacles, leaving a small gap for expansion.
Finishing the Installation:
Once all the planks are laid, install baseboards or moldings to cover the expansion gap around the perimeter. Use a caulking gun to seal any remaining gaps between the planks, walls, and obstacles. Clean the floor thoroughly and enjoy your newly installed vinyl plank flooring.
