How to Transform a Dresser into a Bathroom Vanity

Upcycling a dresser into a bathroom vanity is an ingenious and cost-effective way to add character and storage to your bathroom. With a little creativity and some basic DIY skills, you can create a unique and functional piece that enhances the style of your bathroom.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Dresser
  • Vanity top (granite, quartz, or laminate)
  • Sink and faucet
  • Mirror
  • Plywood or MDF for backsplash (optional)
  • Drawer pulls or knobs
  • Tools: circular saw, drill, sandpaper, paint (optional)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Dresser:

Remove the existing top and hardware. If necessary, sand the dresser to smooth out any rough edges or imperfections. Paint or stain the dresser in your desired color to match your bathroom decor (optional).

2. Install the Vanity Top:

Cut the vanity top to the same size as the original top of the dresser. Secure it in place using screws or wood glue. Make sure the top is level and flush with the edges of the dresser.

3. Install the Sink and Faucet:

Cut a hole in the vanity top for the sink. Place the sink in the hole and secure it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Install the faucet on the sink.

4. Attach the Mirror (Optional):

If desired, attach a mirror above the vanity. You can hang the mirror on the wall or secure it to the backsplash (if installing one).

5. Install the Backsplash (Optional):

Cut a piece of plywood or MDF to fit the width and height of the dresser. Attach it to the back of the dresser to create a backsplash. This will help protect the wall from water and add a finished look.

6. Add Drawer Pulls or Knobs:

Install new drawer pulls or knobs to update the look of the drawers. Choose hardware that complements the style of your bathroom.

7. Seal the Vanity:

Apply a sealant around the edges of the vanity top, sink, and backsplash to prevent water damage. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using the vanity.

Tips:

  • Choose a dresser that is the appropriate size and style for your bathroom.
  • Use a vanity top material that is durable and easy to clean.
  • Be precise when cutting the vanity top and sink hole.
  • Seal the vanity properly to prevent water damage.
  • Add decorative elements such as plants, candles, or artwork to personalize your vanity.
