How to Put in a Bathroom Light Fixture

Replacing a bathroom light fixture is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can safely and easily update the look of your bathroom.

Materials Needed:

  • New light fixture
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Safety First

Before beginning any electrical work, it is important to turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent the risk of electric shock.

Step 2: Remove the Old Light Fixture

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the old light fixture in place. Carefully pull the fixture down from the ceiling, being mindful of any wires that may be attached to it.

Step 3: Disconnect the Wires

Locate the wires that are connected to the old light fixture. Use wire cutters to cut the wires close to the fixture, leaving about 6 inches of wire exposed. Strip about 1 inch of insulation from the ends of each wire.

Step 4: Connect the Wires to the New Fixture

Match the wires from the new light fixture to the wires from the ceiling. Connect the black wire from the fixture to the black wire from the ceiling, the white wire from the fixture to the white wire from the ceiling, and the green wire (ground) from the fixture to the bare copper wire from the ceiling. Twist the ends of the wires together and secure them with electrical tape.

Step 5: Mount the New Fixture

Position the new light fixture against the ceiling and secure it with the screws that came with the fixture. Make sure that the fixture is level and tightly secured.

Step 6: Install the Light Bulbs

Screw the light bulbs into the sockets on the new light fixture. Make sure that the bulbs are the correct wattage and type for the fixture.

Step 7: Turn on the Power

Return to the circuit breaker or fuse box and turn on the power to the light fixture. Test the fixture to make sure that it is working properly.

Tips:

  • Wear safety glasses when working with electrical wires.
  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is always best to consult with a qualified electrician.
  • Before purchasing a new light fixture, make sure that it is compatible with the electrical wiring in your bathroom.
