How to Redo Bathroom Shower Tile

Give your bathroom a fresh and updated look by redoing the shower tile. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or hiring a professional, this guide will provide you with the essential steps to ensure a successful tile redo.

1. Preparing the Shower Area:

Start by removing any existing fixtures, such as the showerhead, trim, and door. Protect the floor and adjacent surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheeting. Use a pry bar to carefully remove the old tiles, starting from the bottom and working your way up.

2. Waterproofing the Shower:

Apply a waterproofing membrane to the shower walls. This will create a moisture barrier to prevent water damage. Use thinset mortar to secure the membrane and ensure a smooth surface for tiling.

3. Installing the Backer Board:

Install a backer board, such as cement board or drywall, over the waterproof membrane. This will provide a stable base for the tiles and prevent them from cracking.

4. Selecting Tiles and Grout:

Choose tiles that complement your bathroom decor and are suitable for wet areas. Consider the size, shape, and color of the tiles. Select grout that matches the color of the tiles and is waterproof.

5. Installing the Tiles:

Apply thinset mortar to the back of each tile and press it firmly into place on the backer board. Use tile spacers to ensure even spacing. Start from the bottom and work your way up, ensuring that the tiles are level and plumb.

6. Grouting the Tiles:

Once the tiles are set, apply grout to the joints using a grout float. Fill the joints completely and smooth the grout with a damp sponge. Allow the grout to set and harden according to the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Sealing the Grout and Tiles:

After the grout has dried, apply a grout sealer to protect it from water penetration. Use a silicone caulk to seal any corners or joints where moisture may accumulate.

8. Reinstalling Fixtures:

Reinstall the showerhead, trim, and door. Make sure to seal around the fixtures with silicone caulk to prevent leaks.

9. Cleaning the Shower:

Clean the shower thoroughly to remove any remaining debris or residue. Use a mild soap and water solution and rinse with clean water. Allow the shower to dry completely before using.

By following these steps, you can successfully redo the bathroom shower tile and enjoy a fresh and updated look for years to come.
