How to Remove a Bathroom Cabinet Countertop

Replacing the countertop in your bathroom can instantly transform the look and feel of the entire space. Removing the old countertop is the first step in this process, and while it may seem daunting, it is a DIY project that is well within reach of most homeowners.

Before you begin, it is important to gather all of the necessary tools and materials. You will need:

Screwdriver
Utility knife
Pry bar
Hammer
New countertop
Caulk gun
Caulk

Once you have all of your supplies, you can begin the removal process by following these steps:

Clear the countertop. Remove any items that are stored on the countertop, such as toiletries, cleaning supplies, and décor.
Disconnect the plumbing. If your countertop has a sink, you will need to disconnect the plumbing before you can remove it. Turn off the water supply to the sink and disconnect the water lines. Then, disconnect the drain pipe from the sink.
Remove the backsplash. If your countertop has a backsplash, you will need to remove it before you can remove the countertop. To do this, use a utility knife to cut the caulk that is holding the backsplash in place. Then, use a pry bar to gently pry the backsplash off of the wall.
Loosen the countertop. Most countertops are attached to the cabinets with screws or bolts. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen these fasteners. Be careful not to remove the fasteners completely at this point.
Lift the countertop. Once the fasteners are loosened, you can carefully lift the countertop off of the cabinets. Be sure to have a helper on hand to assist you with this step, as countertops can be heavy.

Install the new countertop. Once the old caulk is removed, you can install the new countertop. To do this, apply a bead of caulk to the top of the cabinets. Then, carefully lift the new countertop into place and set it on top of the caulk. Be sure to press down on the countertop to ensure that it is properly sealed.
Reconnect the plumbing. Once the new countertop is installed, you can reconnect the plumbing. To do this, connect the water lines to the sink and reconnect the drain pipe to the sink. Then, turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks.
