How to Repair a Bathroom Shower Faucet
A leaky shower faucet can be a major annoyance, not to mention a waste of water. Fortunately, it's a relatively simple repair that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to repair a bathroom shower faucet:
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Replacement washer(s)
- Replacement O-ring(s)
- Plumber's grease
Steps:
- Turn off the water supply to the shower. There should be two shut-off valves located under the sink. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off the water.
- Remove the handle. Most shower handles are held in place by a screw. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw and pull the handle off.
- Remove the cartridge. The cartridge is the part that controls the flow of water. It is usually held in place by a clip or a nut. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the clip or use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut. Pull the cartridge out of the faucet body.
- Replace the washer and O-ring. The washer and O-ring are located on the cartridge. Inspect them for any signs of wear or damage. If either one is damaged, replace it with a new one.
- Apply plumber's grease to the cartridge. This will help to lubricate the cartridge and prevent it from leaking.
- Reinstall the cartridge. Insert the cartridge back into the faucet body and secure it with the clip or nut.
- Reinstall the handle. Align the handle with the cartridge and push it on until it clicks into place. Secure the handle with the screw.
- Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the packing nut or replace the O-ring.
That's it! You have now successfully repaired your bathroom shower faucet.
