How to Replace a Bathroom Sink Cartridge
A leaky bathroom sink cartridge can be a frustrating issue, leading to wasted water and a potential for damage to your bathroom. Replacing the cartridge is a relatively simple task that you can complete yourself with a few basic tools. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Before you start, gather the necessary tools and materials:
- Replacement sink cartridge (make sure it's compatible with your faucet)
- Adjustable wrench
- Basin wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Bucket or bowl
- Plumber's putty (optional)
Step 1: Turn off the Water Supply
Locate the water shut-off valves beneath the sink. Turn both the hot and cold water valves clockwise to shut off the water supply.
Step 2: Open the Faucet
Turn on the faucet to drain any remaining water from the sink.
Step 3: Remove the Handle
Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the handle screws. Lift the handle straight up and off the valve stem.
Step 4: Loosen the Retaining Nut
Position the basin wrench around the retaining nut located beneath the handle. Turn the retaining nut counterclockwise to loosen it.
Step 5: Remove the Cartridge
Gently pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet body.
Step 6: Inspect the Parts
Inspect the old cartridge for any damage or wear. Also, check the O-rings for any signs of deterioration.
Step 7: Apply Plumber's Putty (Optional)
If the cartridge doesn't have pre-installed O-rings, you may apply a thin bead of plumber's putty around the base of the new cartridge to create a watertight seal.
Step 8: Install the New Cartridge
Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body, ensuring that it is aligned correctly. Tighten the retaining nut clockwise using the basin wrench.
Step 9: Reinstall the Handle
Place the handle back onto the valve stem and secure it with the screws.
Step 10: Turn on the Water Supply
Slowly open the water shut-off valves and check for any leaks. If you notice any leaks, tighten the retaining nut further.
Step 11: Test the Faucet
Turn on the faucet and adjust the temperature and pressure as desired. Check for any leaks or unusual sounds.
Tips for Replacing a Bathroom Sink Cartridge
- If you're not sure which replacement cartridge to use, consult your faucet manufacturer or a plumbing professional.
- Use a basin wrench to avoid damaging the finish of your faucet.
- If the retaining nut is particularly tight, you may need to use an adjustable wrench for added leverage.
- Don't overtighten the retaining nut, as this can damage the cartridge or the faucet.
- If you have any leaks after installing the new cartridge, try tightening the retaining nut further. If the leak persists, contact a plumber.
