How to Replace a Bathroom Sink Drain Seal

Is there an odd odor coming from your bathroom drain? Are you noticing leaks under the sink? You might need to replace the drain seal. This task is typically easy to do on your own, and won't take more than 30 minutes. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you replace the drain seal in your bathroom sink.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you begin, you'll need the following tools and materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • New sink drain seal
  • Plumber's putty
  • Clean cloth

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply

To prevent any leaks, you'll need to turn off the water supply to the sink. Typically, there are two valves underneath the sink.

  1. Locate the valves.
  2. Turn the valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.

Step 3: Remove the Old Drain Seal

Once the water supply is off, you can remove the old drain seal. Here's how:

  1. Place a bucket underneath the sink to catch any water.
  2. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the locknut that holds the drain in place.
  3. Once the locknut is loose, use the screwdriver to pry the old drain seal out of the drain.

Step 4: Clean the Drain Opening

Once the old drain seal is removed, you'll need to clean the drain opening. This will ensure that the new seal fits properly.

  1. Use the putty knife to scrape away any old sealant or debris from the drain opening.
  2. Wipe the drain opening with a clean cloth to remove any remaining dirt or debris.

Step 5: Apply Plumber's Putty to the New Drain Seal

Plumber's putty helps to create a watertight seal between the drain seal and the drain opening.

  1. Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a snake-like shape.
  2. Press the putty into the groove around the new drain seal.

Step 6: Install the New Drain Seal

Now, you can install the new drain seal.

  1. Insert the new drain seal into the drain opening.
  2. Hand-tighten the locknut until it's snug.
  3. Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the locknut until it's secure.

Step 7: Turn on the Water Supply

Once the new drain seal is installed, you can turn on the water supply.

  1. Turn the valves underneath the sink counterclockwise to turn on the water supply.
  2. Check for leaks around the drain.

If you notice any leaks, tighten the locknut a little more. Once you're sure there are no leaks, you can put everything back under the sink.
