How to Take Off a Bathroom Sink Faucet Handle

Replacing a bathroom sink faucet handle is a simple plumbing repair that can be done in a few minutes. Here are the steps on how to take off a bathroom sink faucet handle:

Gather the Necessary Tools

You will need the following tools to take off a bathroom sink faucet handle:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver

Shut Off the Water Supply

Before you start, you need to turn off the water supply to the sink. There are usually two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off the water.

Remove the Aerator

Some faucets have an aerator, which is a small screen that screws onto the end of the faucet spout. If your faucet has an aerator, you will need to remove it before you can remove the handle.

To remove the aerator, use an adjustable wrench to loosen it. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the aerator, and then unscrew it by hand.

Remove the Handle Set Screw

Most bathroom sink faucet handles are held in place by a set screw. The set screw is usually located on the top or side of the handle.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the set screw. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the set screw, and then remove it completely.

Pull Off the Handle

Once the set screw is removed, you can pull the handle off the faucet stem. Grip the handle firmly with one hand and pull it straight up. The handle should come off easily.

If the Handle is Stuck

If the handle is stuck, you can try using a little penetrating oil to loosen it. Apply a few drops of penetrating oil to the base of the handle, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, try pulling the handle off again.

If the handle is still stuck, you may need to use a wrench to remove it. Place the wrench on the base of the handle, and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the handle.

Replacing the Handle

Once the handle is off, you can install the new handle. To install the new handle, simply insert it into the faucet stem and tighten the set screw.

Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks.

Congratulations! You have now successfully removed a bathroom sink faucet handle.
