How to Tighten a Loose Bathroom Sink Tap

A loose bathroom sink tap can be annoying and can also lead to water damage if left unrepaired. Fortunately, tightening a loose sink tap is a relatively easy task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools and a little know-how.

Tools You Will Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench (optional)
  • Plumber's putty (optional)

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

The first step is to turn off the water supply to the sink. This is usually done by turning off the shut-off valves located under the sink. If there are no shut-off valves, you will need to turn off the main water supply to your home.

Step 2: Loosen the Locknut

Once the water supply is turned off, you can loosen the locknut that holds the tap in place. To do this, place the adjustable wrench or basin wrench over the locknut and turn it counterclockwise. Be careful not to over-tighten the locknut.

Step 3: Tighten the Packing Nut

Once the locknut is loose, you can tighten the packing nut. The packing nut is located behind the locknut and is used to create a watertight seal. To tighten the packing nut, use the adjustable wrench or basin wrench to turn it clockwise. Again, be careful not to over-tighten the packing nut.

Step 4: Reinstall the Locknut

Once the packing nut is tight, you can reinstall the locknut. To do this, simply turn the locknut clockwise until it is snug. Be sure to not over-tighten the locknut.

Step 5: Turn on the Water Supply

Once the locknut is tight, you can turn on the water supply to the sink. Check for leaks around the tap. If there are any leaks, you may need to tighten the packing nut further or apply plumber's putty to the base of the tap.

Tips

  • If you are having difficulty tightening the tap, try using a penetrating oil to loosen the nuts and bolts.
  • If you are not comfortable working on plumbing, it is best to call a qualified plumber for assistance.
  • Regularly checking and tightening your sink taps can help to prevent them from becoming loose and leaking.
