Install a New Bathroom Sink Drain

Replacing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing repair. With a bit of planning and the right tools, you can quickly and easily update your sink's drainage system. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Tools and Materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's putty
  • New sink drain and tailpiece
  • Bucket
  • Flashlight
  • Paper towels

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves beneath the sink and turn them clockwise to close the water supply. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain

Place the bucket under the sink to catch any water that may drain out. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut that connects the tailpiece (the curved pipe) to the drainpipe. Once the nut is loose, remove the tailpiece and the old drain.

Step 3: Clean the Drainpipe

Use a flashlight to inspect the drainpipe and remove any debris or old sealant. Wipe the inside of the drainpipe clean with paper towels.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a cone shape. Apply the putty to the threads of the new drain's tailpiece, smoothing it out with your fingers.

Step 5: Insert the New Drain

Insert the new drain into the drainpipe and hand-tighten the nut as much as possible. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the nut, but be careful not to overtighten.

Step 6: Install the Tailpiece

Slide the tailpiece over the drainpipe and hand-tighten the nut. Use the wrench to further tighten the nut until it is snug.

Step 7: Turn on the Water Supply

Open the water supply valves and check for leaks around the drain. If you notice any leaks, tighten the nuts further until the leaks stop.

Step 8: Clean Up

Wipe away any excess plumber's putty or water from the sink and surrounding area.

Tips:

  • If your sink has a pop-up drain, be sure to remove the stopper before replacing the drain.
  • Use a little bit of dish soap on the threads of the nut to make it easier to tighten.
  • If you encounter any difficulties, don't hesitate to call a professional plumber for assistance.
