How Do You Stop a Bathroom Sink From Dripping?

A dripping bathroom sink can be a constant annoyance, making it difficult to sleep, relax, or even just enjoy a quiet moment in the bathroom. It can also lead to wasted water, increasing your utility bills and contributing to water waste. However, fixing a dripping bathroom sink is often a straightforward task that can be accomplished with a few simple tools and a little bit of know-how.

Understanding the Problem

Before attempting to fix a dripping sink, it's important to understand the source of the problem. Most dripping sinks are caused by worn-out washers or faulty o-rings in the faucet. These components are responsible for sealing the water flow and preventing leaks. Over time, these parts can wear out, become damaged, or become clogged with mineral deposits, leading to dripping.

Another common cause of dripping is a loose or worn-out faucet cartridge. The cartridge is a replaceable part that controls the flow of water to the spout. If the cartridge is loose, the water may leak past the seals, resulting in a drip.

How to Fix a Dripping Bathroom Sink

Here are the most common methods for stopping a dripping bathroom sink:

1. Tighten the Faucet Handle

In some cases, a dripping sink is simply due to a loose faucet handle. This can often be fixed by simply tightening the handle screw. To do this, you will need a small screwdriver or an Allen wrench. Turn the handle clockwise to tighten it. If this doesn't resolve the problem, you may need to look for other causes.

2. Replace the Faucet Washer

If tightening the handle doesn't work, the most common solution is to replace the faucet washer. This is a small rubber or plastic disc that sits inside the faucet stem and prevents water from leaking. To replace the washer, first, turn off the water supply to the sink. Then, unscrew the faucet handle and remove the stem. The washer will be located at the bottom of the stem.

Remove the old washer and replace it with a new one of the same size and type. Make sure the new washer is properly seated in the stem before reassembling the faucet.

3. Replace the O-Ring

Sometimes, the problem isn't the washer, but rather the o-ring, a small rubber ring that seals the stem to the faucet body. Like the washer, o-rings can become worn, damaged, or clogged with mineral deposits. You can usually find o-rings in a variety of sizes at hardware stores.

To replace the o-ring, first, turn off the water supply to the sink. Then, unscrew the faucet handle and remove the stem. The o-ring will be located on the stem, usually at the point where it enters the faucet body. Carefully remove the old o-ring, taking note of its size and shape. Install a new o-ring of the same size and type, and reassemble the faucet.

4. Replace the Faucet Cartridge

If the problem persists despite replacing the washer and o-ring, the faucet cartridge may be the culprit. The cartridge is a replaceable part that controls the flow of water to the spout. To replace the cartridge, you will need to turn off the water supply to the sink and then remove the faucet handle and the stem. The cartridge will be visible inside the faucet body.

Remove the old cartridge and replace it with a new one. Make sure to choose the correct size and type of cartridge for your faucet. Reassemble the faucet and test for leaks.

5. Call a Plumber

If you are unable to fix the dripping sink yourself, or if the problem is more complicated, contact a professional plumber.
