How to Take Out a Broan Bathroom Fan

Broan bathroom fans are a common sight in many homes, providing ventilation to remove moisture and odors. Over time, these fans may need replacement due to age, wear, or malfunction. Removing an existing Broan fan is a relatively straightforward process, and it can be done by homeowners with basic DIY skills. This guide will walk you through the steps involved in safely removing a Broan bathroom fan.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

Before you begin, ensure you have the following tools on hand:

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead)
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Voltage tester
  • Ladder (if needed)
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves

It is crucial to prioritize safety and always disconnect the power supply to the fan before working on it. Ensure the circuit breaker controlling the fan is switched off and that the power is completely off using a voltage tester.

Step 2: Remove the Fan Cover and Grille

Begin by removing the fan cover. Most Broan fans have a cover that can be easily detached by unscrewing a few screws located at the bottom or sides. If the cover is secured by clips, gently pry it off with a flat-head screwdriver.

After removing the cover, you will see the fan grille, which typically sits over the fan blades. Remove the grille by unscrewing the screws holding it in place. Some grilles may have clips, similar to the cover, requiring gentle prying to detach them.

Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Wiring

With the cover and grille removed, you can now access the electrical wiring connected to the fan. Carefully inspect the wiring connections and take note of their arrangement. This will help you reconnect the wires when installing a new fan.

Using your wire cutters, disconnect the wires from the fan motor. It's essential to note that even with the power switched off, it's prudent to use a voltage tester to confirm the wires are de-energized before disconnecting them. Once the wires are disconnected, carefully set them aside.

Step 4: Remove the Fan Housing

After disconnecting the wiring, the fan housing can be removed. Typically, the fan housing is secured to the ceiling by screws. Locate these screws, usually on the sides or at the bottom of the housing. Unscrew the screws, and the housing should come loose. If the housing is stubborn, gently tap it with a hammer to loosen it.

Once the housing is loose, carefully pull it down from the ceiling. Be mindful of any obstructions or objects that might be in the way.

Step 5: Remove the Ductwork

If your Broan bathroom fan has ductwork connected to it, you'll need to remove this as well. Carefully disconnect the ductwork from the fan housing. Some ductwork may be secured by clamps or screws. You may need to use a screwdriver or pliers to remove these attachments.

Take care not to damage the ductwork during removal. If you intend to reuse the existing ductwork for a new fan, ensure you properly seal any cuts or breaks to maintain its integrity.

By following these steps, you can successfully remove a Broan bathroom fan from your bathroom, preparing it for replacement or inspection. Remember to always prioritize safety by working on de-energized circuits and using appropriate protective gear.
