Installing a Bathroom Sink Pop-Up Drain

Installing a bathroom sink pop-up drain is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber and have your sink draining properly again in no time.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • New pop-up drain assembly
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pliers
  • Putty knife
  • Plumber's putty
  • Flashlight

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain

Begin by placing a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that holds the old drain assembly in place. Once the slip nut is loose, you can pull the old drain assembly out of the sink.

Step 2: Clean the Drain Hole

Once the old drain assembly is removed, use a putty knife to scrape away any old plumber's putty that may be around the drain hole. You want the surface to be clean and smooth before installing the new drain assembly.

Step 3: Apply Plumber's Putty

Take a small piece of plumber's putty and roll it into a rope. Place the rope of putty around the base of the new drain assembly. The putty will help to create a watertight seal between the drain assembly and the sink.

Step 4: Insert the New Drain Assembly

Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole. Use your hands to tighten the slip nut until it is snug. Do not overtighten the slip nut, as this could crack the sink.

Step 5: Install the Pop-Up Stopper

The pop-up stopper is the part of the drain assembly that you push down to close the drain. To install the pop-up stopper, insert the stopper into the drain assembly and turn it clockwise until it is tight.

Step 6: Connect the Drain Pipe

The drain pipe is the pipe that connects the drain assembly to the P-trap. To connect the drain pipe, insert the pipe into the drain assembly and tighten the slip nut until it is snug. Do not overtighten the slip nut, as this could crack the drain pipe.

Step 7: Test the Drain

Turn on the water and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip nuts on the drain assembly and the drain pipe until the leaks stop. Once you are sure that there are no leaks, you can enjoy your newly installed pop-up drain.

Tips:

  • If you have a flashlight, use it to look inside the drain hole before you install the new drain assembly. This will help you to see if there are any obstructions that need to be removed.
  • When you are tightening the slip nuts, be sure to use an adjustable wrench. Using pliers can damage the slip nuts.
  • If you are not comfortable installing a pop-up drain yourself, you can hire a plumber to do it for you.
